Extérieur passé (2006)
During the Second World War, Camp Joffre in F-Rivesaltes was used to group together people who were deemed undesirable, especially Jews and Romany. The site gradually evolved from a center for accommodation to one of internment, then a transit center prior to deportation. In 2006, as part of the prelude to a memorial, I decided to evoke this historic period. I searched for archival images of life in the camp in 1941–42, placed their reproductions in the ruined barracks, and then photographed these ephemeral installations. The work invites us to look at such historical sites by reappropriating the material of collective memory. The archival images were kindly provided from the collections of Auguste Reiter (Switzerland) and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (United States).
