Le plateau (2014)
Aubrac—a vast, empty, medium-altitude plateau, a mix of grasslands and mountain pastures, scattered with curious boulders. A rural area, more remote, more rugged than many others, but nonetheless representative of life away from cities. I met farmers there and I asked them to choose a place for me to photograph them. I wasn’t interested in their activity, but in their relationship with this land, which they had not only been living on, but also shaping and developing, for generations. The challenge in this work was to reconcile two traditions in the one image: portrait and landscape. As in my previous work, I wanted to create contemplative images. But this time, perhaps, going beyond documentary.
