Presque rien mais assez (2001)
As part of my studies in visual anthropology, I spent five weeks with young people living on the streets of Yogyakarta in Indonesia. Believing that reality is plural, and that these were the people in the best position to show me what the street is really like, I asked them to work together to create a multi-experience account, based on exchange and diversity. My portraits of those who took part referenced police imagery to denounce the way these people are perceived and treated: as delinquents outside the law. The story of their typical day at a crossroads is told through a series of color images taken when I wasn’t around, using disposable cameras, and which we then ordered and captioned together. My black-and-white photo-report highlights other aspects of daily life. Their drawings with added commentaries give an even clearer picture of their relationship with the street. Multiplying perspectives and mediums in this way was a response to the double challenge of questioning the documentary approach and the complexity of a little-known phenomenon.
