Harkis à vie ? (2003-2005)

It wasn’t until fifty years after the beginning of the Algerian War that the history of the Harkis began emerging in our consciousness. To mark this anniversary, I undertook to explore, from one generation to another, from one individual to another, the construction of identity with this “community of shared destiny.” All over France I asked men and women of various ages to pose for the camera, simply as witnesses of their affiliation. Testimonials taken from my interviews accompany these faces, although not associated with them individually. At times redundant, at others contradictory, the words evoke the journeys they took and question a history of a period that has received little media attention. The photographs of the remains of the camps where most of the Harkis and their families passed through, sometimes living in them for years following their arrival in France, act as a counterpoint.

Support from Fonds d’action et de soutien pour l’intégration et la lutte contre les discriminations.
