Zones (2007-2010)

Produced as part of the collective project ”France14,” “Zones” is the first of the six parts that constitute my work ”En France” (2007–2014). I originally decided to not focus on a theme, but to simply wander, to get lost in France. From one trip to the next, I found I kept returning to the same sites: residential and commercial areas on the outskirts of towns. Working there was a clear reaction to what I was seeing everywhere: urban sprawl, the sprawl of an individualistic, consumerist, and surveillance-obsessed society. With standardized living spaces, where everything looks the same, nothing is identifiable, except for the signs, signals, and obstacles placed everywhere until uneasiness. So I chose to depict them in a way avoiding any reference points and bringing out from each image an underlying strangeness.
